1% for the Planet (FTP): Empowering Change Through Environmental Philanthropy

In a world where environmental challenges are increasingly pressing, particularly as Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average since the 1980s and major human, economic and environmental toll, organisations like 1% for the Planet should be supported as they lead the way in driving positive change.⁠

1% FTP is a global movement that connects businesses, individuals, and non-profits to support environmental causes. The concept is simple yet oh-so powerful: participating businesses, like ourselves, commit to donating 1% of their annual sales to approved environmental non-profits all over the world. By pooling resources and fostering collaboration, 1% for the Planet enables impactful initiatives, in locations from Ireland to New Zealand, aimed at addressing pressing environmental issues.
Where did the 1% FTP come from?
The idea was born in 2002 when Yvon Chouinard, founder of outdoor clothing
company Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of fly-fishing equipment company Blue Ribbon Flies, recognised the need for businesses to contribute directly to environmental preservation. Their vision has since inspired thousands of companies and individuals to join the movement, resulting in significant support for environmental causes worldwide. “This is not philanthropy. Since our first sale in February 2021, and every sale since, when you buy from
Conscious Convert 1% of the total value of your purchase goes directly to environmental non-profits, that means you are contributing to essential work to protect and restore tour world.These contributions are actively engaged in protecting our planet, it's natural resources, conserving biodiversity, mitigating climate change, and advocating for sustainable practices. Every euro is channelled towards making a genuine difference in environmental conservation.

Environmental non-profits in Ireland that benefit from funds donated to 1% FTP include BirdWatch Ireland, Co. Wicklow, Global Action Plan Ireland, Ballymun, Dublin, Cork Nature Network, Cork, Irish Peatland Conservation Rathangan, Co. Clare, Hometree, Miltown Malbay, Burrenbeo, Kinvara Co. Galway, Irish Seed Savers Association, Co. Clare. Conscious Convert has also awarded a percentage of your purchases to HomeTree in Clare this year, who are working to protect the future of Irish Forrests through their Afforestation programme. 

You may question why just 1%, it doesn’t seem enough?  We donate 1% of gross sales, that is sales before any costs are considered so it can equate to a lot more then 10-20% profit (sales after costs). The movement extends beyond financial contributions. One Percent for the Planet encourages collaboration and knowledge-sharing among its members, fostering a community of like-minded individuals and businesses committed to creating a sustainable future.
