Creating a Sleep Sanctuary This Christmas

The magic of Christmas is something I’ll always cherish — the lights, the gatherings, the cosy moments at home. But let’s be honest… it can also be a lot.
Between Gifted prep, keeping up with orders, school events, hidden presents (that even I sometimes forget about), and the general swirl of December, I find myself craving one thing at the end of the day: a place to unwind completely.

For me, that place is my sleep sanctuary — my little haven of calm where I can switch off, decompress, and remember that yes, even adults deserve a bedtime routine.

Here’s how I create mine, in case you’d like to borrow a few ideas this season:

Begin with fresh, breathable sheets

There’s nothing quite like sliding into cool, crisp, organic cotton at the end of a long day.
The long-staple fibres feel beautifully smooth, wash after wash, and help your body settle into rest.

(And between us… putting a hot water bottle in between the sheets, before you jump in, is the closest thing to heaven.)

Soft lighting only

The “big light” is banned in my room from November through January.
Instead, I switch on a warm lamp, a candle, or even fairy lights.
It instantly changes the atmosphere — like telling your nervous system, It’s okay. You’re safe. Slow down.

A calming natural scent

A few spritzes of linen spray on the pillow or duvet works wonders.
It’s the subconscious cue my brain responds to every time: You’re done. Time to rest.
(Yes, I sometimes overdo it. No regrets.)

The phone goes away

This one is simple but life-changing:
Do Not Disturb ON.
If I answer one late-night email, I’ll be mentally rewriting product descriptions till 1am — so away it goes.

Add texture and comfort

A throw at the end of the bed adds a layer of warmth and softness — and on the nights when the duvet is definitely not folded perfectly… the throw covers all sins.

A sanctuary is not about perfection

It’s about intention.
It’s about gifting yourself a moment of peace in the middle of a beautifully busy season.

This Christmas, I hope you find a little sanctuary of your own — a place that lets you breathe deeper, rest easier, and wake feeling more like yourself.

Because rest is the greatest gift we can give ourselves.
